Learning the Tarot

When I was in my 20's, and in a far more pragmatic state of mind, I visited a tarot card psychic with a friend. Daisy swore by the woman and I was infected by her enthusiasm and, no doubt, desirous of having someone tell me how my life was going to go. I was wild, young and at loose ends and it would have been nice to have the guidance, however tenuous.

But the woman was an affected gypsy-esque character, filled with wild exhortations and predictions which, even to my overly-melodramatic character, were quite ludicrous. She gasped at every turn of the card, cast theatrical glances at us and tsked and rolled her eyes. She told me that I would shortly become the wife of a Frenchman owner of a vineyard and would be mother to his 2 children, both boys.

Need I say that nary a detail came to pass?

But my curiosity evolved into a sincere desire to find out the secrets of the cards. To discover the Tarot and learn to divine, for myself, what it has to teach.

I'm starting from scratch (as I am so many things) and though I have my favorite Tarot deck - a dragon tarot purchased from the Mythical Creatures exhibit at the Museum of Natural History - I don't keep it ensconced in a velvet pouch (to the dismay of a more experienced student of the tarot. But it speaks to me, and I carry it everywhere with me. I look at each card and wonder at the deeper meanings. I do readings for myself (fearful still of even thinking of reading for others) and I do own numerous decks that are even more complex and filled with multiple meanings than my current Dragon tarot.

While away some time with me. Investigate the mysteries of the divination system that goes back to time immemorial. From Rider-Waite to The Witches Tarot. From the Fool to the World, from the Ace of Wands to the King of Pentacles. I'm going to unearth the truths the cards have. Explore the secrets.

Travel with me, why don't you?
